From 2013-2015 Pat and Pip spent two years as VSA volunteers in Timor-Leste.

Pat worked as communications advisor for World Vision. He mentored local Timorese staff in writing stories, editing and producing publications in English and Tetun. He also edited and designed Dear Timor-Leste, Poems of Hope, a booklet of poems by Australian poet Cameron Semmons.

Pip taught English to Timorese students and creative writing to local researchers. She also wrote wrote the first creative writing guide, Matadalan Hakerek Creativu, in the national language, Tetun.
